•  A digital signature is an electronic form of a signature that can be used to authenticate the identity of the sender of a message or the signer of a document, and also ensure that the original content of the message or document that has been sent is unchanged. Digital signatures are easily transportable and cannot be imitated by someone else. The ability to ensure that the original signed message arrived means that the sender cannot easily disclaim it later. 

 Q. Should individual's signature and encryption certificate be different? 

•  Yes, The signature and encryption certificate should be separate for an individual. The encryption keys are to be generated at the subscriber's system and should be archived prior to transfer into crypto-medium. The signature keys should be generated in the crypto-medium and should not be copied. 

Q. Does one require multiple certificates for different application? 

•  
  No, Ideally, there should not be any requirement for different certificates, however the person holding lower assurance Class 2 certificate may require higher assurance Class 3 certificates for application which demand the same. The higher assurance Class 3 certificates can be used where ever application requires lower assurance certificate. Apart from assurance, depending on the information included in the DSC (For example PAN Number may be required by application) additional certificate may be required.

•  Class 3 : The verification requirements are 
• (i) ID Proof & Address Proof 
• (ii) Paper based application form with other supporting documents and 
• (iii) Forward SMS + Video Verification. The Private Key generation and storage should be in Hardware cryptographic device validated to FIPS 140-1/2 level 2. 

•   A public key infrastructure (PKI) supports the distribution, verification and revocation of public keys used for public key encryption, and enables linking of identities with public key certificates.
   
•  A PKI enables users and systems to securely exchange data over the internet and verify the legitimacy of certificate-holding entities, such as webservers, other authenticated servers and individuals. The PKI enables users to authenticate digital certificate holder.

•  An E-tokens is a secure hardware device that contains private and public key certificates, and a cache of other certificates. E-Tokens enhance the security of data on public and private networks. E-tokens can be used to generate and provide secure storage for passwords and Digital certificates, for secure authentication, digital signing and encryption. 

•   A root certificate is self ­signed or self recognized public key certificate that identifies the Root Certificate Authority (CA). Root Certifying Authority of India (RAI) is responsible for issuing root certificates in India. 

•  Certifying Authorities are licensed bodies which facilitate digital signature certificate. Certifying authorities are regulated by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), a government of India endeavour. They are licensed to issue, revoke, renew and cache digital signature certificates. 

•  A smart card is a plastic card which looks similar to a credit card. It has a built-in microprocessor and memory which is used for identification during financial transactions. When it is inserted into a reader, it transfers data to and from a central computer. It is more secure than a magnetic stripe card. It can also be programmed for Self-destruction to prevent its misuse. Self destruction is initiated if an unauthorized authentication is being performed several times. 

•  An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a standard security technology. It provides a secure connection between internet browsers and websites, allowing you to transmit private data online. Websites frequently use SSL technology for secure online monetary transactions through credit cards or internet banking. 

•  There are three easy steps involved to apply for a Paperless Digital Signature Certificate:
  Step 1: Fill the Digital Signature Certificate application specifying the User Type, Certificate class, etc.
  Step 2: Submit the relevant documents as required and make the payment for the application.
